David wrote Psalm 3 while in the midst of what must have been one of the most challenging times of his life.  An army, led by his own son, Absalom, has risen up to dethrone him.  But while it would be natural for him to feel great fear, instead he feels that presence and projection of the LORD, like a shield around him.  He had peace in his life because he understood that whatever glory he may have known as the king of Israel pales in comparison to the Glory of God which is sustaining Him.
